Student autonomy, relevance and their positive impact on learner motivation are not new ideas. However, many Physical Education environments remain teacher-centred, where the teacher acts alone or without student voice in making decisions about what students will learn and how such learning will be demonstrated. This presentation will be centred around the meaningful PE framework developed by Fletcher et al. (2017), with a specific focus on the feature on democratic practice. I will share strategies that I have used, as well as those shared by other educators that help facilitate students finding their own way towards valuing and taking responsibility for physical activity.

Anti-Asian racism is pervasive in our society. The current increase in racist attitudes and behaviors towards Asians and people of Asian descent due to the COVID-19 outbreak has negatively impacted the health, well-being and safety of educators, students, families, and communities of Asian descent. This professional learning session will include an analysis and of how our own biases in PHE affect our students and programming by using lived experiences by both students and staff. By the end of the session, participants will gain valuable information to lead through change and effectively understand, respond, intervene and act when issues of injustice, human rights, equity, and oppression arise in our school PHE and athletic programming.
